Do you know why we celebrate birthdays?
The idea of celebrating the date of your birth is a pagan tradition. In fact, many Christians didn’t celebrate birthdays historically, because of that link to paganism. Pagans thought that evil spirits lurked on days of major changes, like the day you turn a year older.
Do you know why we sing happy birthday to each other? This song is said to have been composed by two Kentucky-born sisters, Patty and Mildred Hill, and it was first published in “Song Stories for the Kindergarten” in 1893. The words of the ‘Good Morning Song’ were cleverly changed to the happy birthday song we all know so well today.
Nowadays, birthdays are a time to celebrate and reflect on the progress we are making and the good that has come from the previous year. Birthdays are a happy time – a time to feel appreciated by our loved ones!
